Shot or not?

What are your thoughts on the H1N1 vaccine?

Your odds of getting swine flu are incredibly low and your odds of dying from it are even lower. We dont know anything about this shot - what's in it, the complications of it, odds of being injured by it. I say take your chances with the flu and wash your hands all the time!

I'm totally against the swine flu shot. I'm not big on getting vaccines other than those necesary.
We have had the swine flu here at our house and it truly wasn't any different than the "regular flu".
My oldest daughter did end up with pnuemonia from it, but this is a side effect of this particular strain.
They only time they tell you to worry is when or if you have someone in your house who has ill health or breathing issues such as asthma.
Good luck with your decision!

Every report I've read or heard says that the shot has the same components as the regular flu shot does. It's just a different strain of flu and that they made it the same way they make the seasonal flu shot (which I have never gotten).

A few more kids just died from this. I read a report that this has killed more children this year than the seasonal flu typically does and chances are good that your kids will get it. I've never heard of entire schools closing because of the regular flu. Have you? Maybe it just wasn't on our radar?

I'm torn but leaning towards getting it because 1/3 of the kids who have died did not have underlying complications (such as asthma).

Still researching...calling our Dr. neighbor today to see what he thinks.

The doctor I work with recommends children to get it....

We don't get the flu shot- swine or not. My kids have gotten sick from it every time they got it. We take echincea and they haven't gotten the flu in 3 years. Knock on Wood.

My mother and I had a bit of a disagreement about it - I refuse to get it because it's too new. Maybe next year, but not this year. I want to see what happens to everyone else.

My little brother and sister have already come down with swine flu (bro has it right now actually) and I had the regular flu a couple weeks ago. It's not worth it to me. :)

We're getting it no doubt about it. (I'm sure this doesn't surprise you.) The odds of getting the swine flu are NOT low. There are tons of people around here who have had it already. I know a girl our age who is on a ventilator b/c of it right now. I don't know if she had underlying medical conditions or not though. I agree with one of the previous commenters... it's made the same way as the regular flu vaccine, so what's the big deal? My pedi recommends it, and all of his staff and their children will get it. If I didn't have a sick baby, I think we'd probably still get it.

I don't do the "regular" flu vax, so I have no plans to do the H1N1 either. My DH usually does the flu shot, I'm not sure what his plans are for the other. I've never done flu shots for the kids either. We DO, however, vaccinate for everything else, including my DD doing the Gardisil series.

Short and sweet, NO!
My Hub is an Immunologist and wont even think about it. No research has been done on after affects-its been pushed way to quickly to market.

I think the H1N1 has already made the rounds in my house. My kids were sick a little over a week ago and when I took them to the doctor last Monday they both had pnuemonia. My oldest has asthma and this is his third time with pnuemonia. I know pnuemonia can become a life threatening complication but my kids were both fine. They honetly weren't acting more sick than kids with the flu. I just knew their breathing and cough sounded worse than it should. They go back to the doctor Monday to recheck their lungs at which time I am going to ask about the vaccine. Since they probably already had H1N1 they should have built up some immunity from it.

We have gotten the seasonal flu shot in our house the past 7 years due to my son's asthma and my medical conditions. This year I also work with infant twins who cannot be vaccinated. I think once everyone is well again we will get seasonal flu shots since we have never had complications but skip H1N1 since I think it may be uncessary at this point.

Good luck deciding!

Not gonna do it.

I only get the regular flu vaccine for my kids until they turn 8. And I get the flu mist for them until it's not an option. It's more effective since it's the live virus and lasts longer. Hubby and I never have - and don't plan to - get any type of flu vaccine. For healthy adults it just seems unnecessary.

Honestly, I am so completely torn on this issue. There are so many conflicting reports that it makes my head spin. I'm leaning towards not getting it for many of the reasons already listed. But also worry since DD has reactive airways and is very prone to respiratory infections.
I know my answer doesn't help at all. I'm still struggling with the decision.

Very torn over here. Lots of worrying, hand wringing and wondering....

We will not be getting the regular flu or swine flu shots. If we had children, I might feel differently. For now, we will just continue taking vitamins, washing our hands frequently and hope we don’t get it!

After reading all these posts, I am so confused!

Uh, don't even say those words to me. H1N1 and schools are driving me insane! I am curious to hear others thoughts though.

Not doing it here. I keep it quiet though - I know people who think we are bad parents for not giving it to our daughter & I just don't want to listen to them. Most of the time I just keep my mouth shut when the topic comes up (hard for me to do!) We do the other things to try to keep from getting sick - washing hands, alot, eating healthy, etc. So far so good but I know this is the first yr for H1N1. We have never gotten the regular flu shot either.

The pediatrician we go to strongly recommends the vaccine. But I also have the same concerns that I've seen in the other comments...the vaccine just came out so quickly that no one knows what the long term effects are.

But, with that said, I have 2 kids who have mild asthma. In fact, Landon has a cold right now and he's already experiencing wheezing. It makes me nervous for those 2 kids specifically to NOT have the H1N1 vaccine.

I just don't know....the shot won't even be available in our dr's office for another couple weeks. So it gives me time to really think it over and make a decision. In the meantime, we're avoiding heavily crowded places like the mall and avoiding playdates where there will be lots of children. And washing our hands like crazy!

I asked the doctor a lot of questions about the vaccine and really wasn't satisfied with any of the answers I got. I asked if my grandchildren could be born with deformities if my daughters got the vaccine and she kept saying they don't know for sure. Every answer was 'it hasn't been around long enough for us to know for sure'. I said if they can't be sure then I'm certainly not stabbing myself or my children with it. Besides, the only one I was really worried about was my 6 year old because he has asthma and I thought he would be the one who would find it hardest to fight off and they wouldn't even give it to kids under 10 anyway so I really saw no point at all.
