Plenty of Friday Fragments

Since I haven't done any fragments in forever, I have plenty to share to today.

But first, here's the costume compromise. Sass is going to be Tinkerbell. And wear her arrival dress. I am not up on my Disney Fairies, but apparently they are cooler to an 8 year old than Disney Princesses. Nor do I know anything about this "arrival dress" or why Tinkerbell (& for the over 30 crowd, it's Tink now) is wearing this at all! But Sass preferred the white to the green (too common I guess) & it's Disney & if I make her wear a tiara, I can pretend!

I couldn't find any good pictures of it on the internet. Like I said, it's NOT too common. She probably wore it for 5 minutes in the movie. That would be the Disney Fairies movie, not the one that made her famous, Peter Pan. Is Tink turning into a diva?

What do you think?
Here are some of the frag-worthy things that have happened around here in the last few weeks:

*I took blueberry muffins to Bo's class for blue day. You know, the just add milk kind. I asked him how they were & he told me that one kid said that they were the best muffins he'd ever had. Poor child. His mother must be even less domestic than me. I know you are cringing, EM.

*Some friends of ours have a house on Lake Michigan in a Country Club neighborhood. And the groundskeeper found a tooth from a Mammoth about 100 yds from their house! Seriously. Google it! Archaeologists from Siberia are coming to look for more. Isn't that crazy. Bo thought it was the one from Ice Age.

*Have you seen the email going around about ponytail holders that are being made (in other country's, of course) with used condoms? Gross. "Don't throw that away, hon, I need to pull my hair up!"

*I asked Baby Girl if she needed to go potty before she went to school & she told me 'they have 2 pottys there'. She also calls her "girly business" her body. It gets kind of confusing around here sometimes. We say tu-tu, which also gets confusing (especially on dance day).

*School is turning my sweet baby, Bo into such a stinkin' little BOY. He talks about sports & wants a basketball "court", Transformers (never seen the show), guns & now he picks on his sisters! He has also becoming more of a Daddy's boy, but I'm still his favorite!

*2nd grade is kicking my butt! Sassy is awful at spelling & doesn't like to read! Which baffles me, I have a degree in journalism. At least she's good at math. Any tips on the reading & spelling? I've tried bribery. In monetary form & in Webkinz form.

*Baby Girl has been hoarse for 2 months because she strained her vocal chords. Screaming!
And why is it that she will do everything that Dora, Diego & Ki-lan ask her to do, but when I ask her to do something her response is "I ain't gonna do it!'? That is until she gets a spanking. My other children watched Dora, but never "held their hands up to catch something"!

*Don't they make GPS's for children? I need 3 for each of my kids & one for Baby Girl's Bitty Baby, P.A. Seriously, the one I need for P.A. is the one I need the worst! Oh & one for Bo's pillow too.

*I'm currently reading Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank, which btw is one of my biggest pet-peeves! Ya'll know. And it is a fabulous book. This chic thinks just like me. And she's from the South, so that's mo betta. I highly recommend any of Celia Rivenbark's books! They all sound fabulous! Even the titles rock! And I love titles.

*On a more serious note, ya'll check out this link http://www.christophercoleman.net/EmpoweredMinistries/testimony.html.

This guy spoke at our church & has a AWESOME story.

The ponytail condom is AWFUL!!!!

I know the exact Tink dress she's talking about! It's WAY cuter than the green leaf one! Tinkerbell wears it for about three minutes at the very beginning of the movie, before she becomes a Tinker Fairy...

I can relate to most of your fragments today, with the exception of the used condom pony tail holder.. Dear gussie that is just so wrong!!

And yes, it is Tink now and the arrival dress is a huge hit in our house, too!

Tink is a diva :-) That sounds like a good 8 year old compromise to me. My 8 year old says she is too old for princesses and my 6 year old is fast approaching. Sigh!

I will have to check of the "Stop dressing your 6 year old like a skank." It sounds interesting.

Have a great weekend!

Exactly why I cannot stand Limited Too. Those clothes send me into a rant like you've never seen.

About the reading and spelling - well - now I will say that there are some children who are genius IQ and cannot spell a lick! It has been proven that to a certain degree spelling skills are hereditary. That has been true in my family. Me = Yes; Mr. Preppy 101 = No; Daughter = No; Son = Yes. But she is going to just have to buckle down and memorize cause her grades will suffer if not. And the Reading. Honestly, Semi - that is the Gateway to success academically. Even if she loves math, the day will come that she will have to read and understand word problems in math. Reading skills = success in all content areas. Plus the ACT and SAT have tough reading sections. This is just one of those things that we all have to do things we hate. Life lesson. You could always go the tutor route - they will perform for a tutor when they will NOT for mom and dad! xoxo

So, you brought back memories of a story my mom has told about me time and time again. As a toddler/child they and I would refer to my "girly bits" as my tu-tu, as well. It was all fine and dandy till Grandpa was over (who was ULTRA conservative, for the record) and asked to see my tu-tu. My DANCE tu-tu. Me being the well mannered, do as I was told toddler/child that I was (the sarcasm is quite thick here!) I yanked down my pants and my panties...and showed Grandpa the 'ol tu-tu. My parent's were MORTIFIED!

And I'm glad I have already eaten dinner...used condoms...in your hair? RALF!

And who knew Tinkerbell, er, I mean, Tink, turned into a diva?! Looks like I'm outta the Disney fairies loop. Whoops!

Have a great weekend!

Ramona books! Perfect for grades 2 and 3... Rebecca loved them! Encourage her to read anything... magazines, comics, etc... as long as she is reading. Does Tink have any unauthorized bios out?

Spelling will get better this year. 2nd grade is pivotal for that. I'm a pretty lousy speller myself. I'm a fantastic editor though and use dictionaries and spell check all the time. Not to worry.

Oh, I've read that book! I agree, it's hilarious. I want to read more by the author but haven't yet.

I loved the Ramona books and the American Girl series when I was that age!

What's a GSP?

As far as spelling- have you tried a dry-erase board or chalk board? Sometimes that makes it more fun. Also, maybe the soap in deodorant bottle type things and she could practice them on the shower wall.

Have you tried letting her pick out some books on topics that interest her?

We go on a book shopping trip to the book store after school ends each year and my girls get to pick whatever they want to read all summer. Our relatives now give them gift cards to Barnes & Noble that they look forward to spending on their trip. There are some really great easy to read fairy books out there (if she likes fairies) like the Rainbow magic series.

Not sure what her reading level is but another series that my daughters really liked were the Judy Moody books.

You might also check with her BFF's mom to see what she's reading.

I guess I, too, would be concerned about a second grader who doesn't like to read. And spelling troubles, huh? Do you think she might be dyslexic? I guess that's a leap, but she's so young to not like reading already. I like the whiteboard idea and the book suggestions. If those don't work, I recommend an evaluation.

Awww. Before you know it, he won't hold your hand in public anymore :( Maybe you should home school him, haha.

That mammoth tooth find? Wow! How cool is that?!

BTW, I loved your muffin story. I'm going to link to you in a few days, since I'm collecting a ton of great fragments from this week :)

Oh goodness, I'd love to read that book even though I don't have children.

love your fragments. Oh we have a tu-tu here as well! Except Miss Kindergarten Sofia now knows she should call it her "pagina"! The Tink costume is cute.
