Fifteen years ago...

But first, the Semi-Slackers had a fab Fourth. Partied with family & friends at an annual 4th of July pool party.

A group of my parent's friends have a party every year & the children & grandchildren get to come. One of the hosts granddaughters is Bo's "girlfriend". I had to reign him in on the (4 year old style) PDA.

We ate way too much; ribs, BBQed chicken, all the fixings & tons of desserts. I wowed everyone with my once-a-year back flip off the diving board. I think Retro was surprised I could still do it, he missed last year's.

After the party, I bribed the children with fireworks to let me finish my book, Sundays at Tiffany's. Great book, BTW! Then we rode around on the golf cart to watch some of the neighbor's fireworks & came home to do our own. For $30 at the fireworks stand, you can put on an amazing fireworks display!!! Well, amazing for some 7, 4 & 2 year olds.

Now, back to 15 years ago. On July 5, 1994, our area was hit by a flood! Aside from all the rain & washed out roads, we were okay. But some people around here had it pretty bad. Our "big town" didn't have running water for THREE WEEKS! Seriously, 23 days. And a whole town south of us was flooded.

That's the closest thing to a "natural disaster" I had ever experienced first-hand. Several roads around my house were washed out, so we had to drive "around our arse to get to our elbow" to go anywhere. And there wasn't any going to the big city, because everything, all the restaurants were closed.

Sass likes to hear us talk about The Flood & look at my pictures, which, of course I couldn't find. But I did find these...

My friends & I were able to make the most out of a bad situation & have a blast the rest of the summer.

Trista Yearwood (before Garth) & one of my favorite college bands, Kinchafoonee Cowboys played a benefit concert at the fairgrounds & everybody had shirts that say I Survived the Flood of 94.

Now that was one interesting summer. One that I will never forget.

That flood is crazy! I'm like your Sass though - my mom and dad were small kids, 5 and 6 I think, when Hurricane Camile hit here. Mom lived in one county and dad lived the neighboring one and they have completely different stories - mom's is much more horrific because she was where it was the worst. It fascinates me. My grandparents have some way interesting stories and my stepdad was actually born the day the hurricane hit.

And $30 worth of fireworks can amuse a 23 year old as well... :)

That flood looks CRAZY!!! glad you survived it! I think that was the year we had the crazy ice storm in Memphis that knocked out the town for days...

A flip!?! Wow. That flood is crazy. When I was younger, I used to hope that it would rain that much in my town so I could take a boat to my friend's house. Then, the weekend before my wedding, I got all that rain I was asking for (well, not quite enough for a boat) and everything flooded. Thank goodness my dress was housed in a shop at the top of a hill. No flooding. Talk about a sigh of relief!

I was working and got sent home. I will never forget driving home from the packing shed in the pouring rain. I went down that little dip in the road right after you leave the shed, and water was pouring into my car from under the doors! Crazy stuff!

When I was growing up in Ft. Wayne Indiana we had a flooding situation and everyone volunteered and filled sandbags. John Cougar Mellencamp did a free concert for all of the volunteers. Awesome reward for lending a helping hand!
