I have to draw the line somewhere...

and I'm drawing it on multi-tasking while driving!

Seriously, I do not think my children understand the concept of safe driving or driving in general.

We spent at least a hour a day in the car. You know, going to school(s), coming from school(s), in the drive-thur, whatever.

And generally speaking, I am rather good at multi-tasking in the car.

I can DJ, work all audio/visual components, serve food & drinks, talk on the phone, referee arguments &/or physical altercations, pick up items off the back seat floor (which may or may not contribute to my back problems), call out spelling words, deliver kittens to school to show-off (never again) and many other things I'm sure.

But I hard as I try, I can not tie your shoes when you are seating in the seat behind me - BABY GIRL! She could not understand why I wouldn't tie her shoes on the way home from school! I know she's only 2, but really, does it take a rocket scientist to figure this out!

Let me add that she was also upset that I wouldn't get the pissed-up kitten out of the box she was being transported in & let her hold the thing while she scratched the fire out of both of us while trying to drive!

I really hope they can grasp the whole "keep your eyes on the road" concept before they turn 16!

And thank you so much for your concern. Baby Girl is feeling better, but now Bo has a fever (with no other symptoms). Imagine that.

I hear you! Sofia does not understand why I can not read or help her with the DS game or remark on her school projects while I am driving. She gets so mad at me and there I am trying to justify why I can't do all those things and drive at the same time. I mean, come on I am already talking on the phone with one of the hands I should be driving with!

Thanks for the good laugh. It sounds like one of our trips. So glad Baby Girl is feeling better. We will be praying for Bo.

Oh, this happens to me every single day! Evie throws her toys, shoes, you name it, on the floor of the car and then gets angry when I can't pick them up!

If I ever have to get a job and they ask about my skills I will reply with details on my multi tasking abilities. I also can preform multi task in car...I bet you are pretty good at make up application while driving too.

My daughter is also 2 and this sounds like something she'd be upset about.

Sometimes she likes to throw her toys on the ground and freak out because SHE threw it and I'm all, "Darling, Mommy is driving, I can't quite get Elmo right now!" and then she'll scream her deafening scream. It's not fun. I need to invest in ear plugs.

Oh man, I deal with the same thing here as well. My big twins sit in the very back row in our mini-van and they'll drop something on the floor and then yell to me, "Mommy, can you pick up my book (or whatever it is they dropped)?" And I yell back, "no, I'm driving" and they always always always yell back, "Well, then stop driving and pick up my book".

Oh and I simply love when they scream "Mommy, the DVD is frozen" and then I have to contort my body into a wierd position to reach far back enough to fix the darn DVD.

My niece is 10 and she still doesn't understand why I can't read or look at what she is doing when I drive. I explained to her it is like her ridding her bike. When you don't pay attention on the bike you hit telephone poles yup thats right telephone poles. She quickly understood as she was the one looking over her shoulder yelling at her dad and smacked that pole so hard she broke her hand!

Sounds like my trips in the car! My 3 yr old is constantly asking me to fix his shoe or look at that. Tough times!

Poor Bo, sending good thoughts his way too!

I don't think you would approve when I drive with my knees so I can multitask...freaks my kids out.

Wait, that sounds like a good one for not me monday...

"mom, look at this. See mom. mom why aren't you looking?" I find that if I just make an effort to look in the rearview mirror (i still can see it) and say, "Oh that's neat, yep" then they are satisfied. I'm guessing that's not going to work much longer.

Went through something of the same nature. My twins think I am the flight attendant of my car. It is crazy that I have to explain to them..that we might hit a tree if I don't keep my eyes on the road!! Love your blog.

It is amazing how children act when you're driving, sorta like when you're on the phone. I don't know how many times I've told my 10 year old daughter not to scream when she sees something or hears something so I don't have a heart attack and drive us off the road. Does it work? Not on our lives!
