Are You Green?

Today is Earth Day, I'm feeling kinda guilty.

Hi! My name is Semi-Slacker Mom & I am not very "GREEN". I SAID my name was Semi-Slacker Mom. And these kids. What do you expect?

I don't recycle. But I do give our old newspapers (that we get everyday even though our paper is online) to my housekeeper. My house is cluttered enough as it is without adding recycling bins. Then I'd have to haul everything to the recycling center. I may be more willingly if we had blue boxes that the garbage truck picked up.

I drive a Yukon XL! You could fit one of those smart cars in my "way back". Hey, I've got 3 kids in car seats, give me a break. And I like a big car for safety reasons too. I also drive to & from Sassy's school, at least twice a day, 16 miles away. She'll probably start riding the bus in the next few years.

I have been known to turn on the heat & a/c in the same day! You can blame Georgia's crazy weather on that one.

I keep my heating pad plugged in all the time. And the coffee pot, dust buster, toaster. If I unplug it, I'll either lose it or go to use it & it won't be ready.

I don't think we own anything energy-efficient. Laptops use less power than PCs. I'd be willingly to try that. Anybody want to donate one? And my children sleep with their closet lights on. I did this till I got married, so it's non-negotiable. And if I'm home alone, the TV must be on for background noise.

I do buy those cute little recyclable totes, but I forget to take them to the store. But I DO reuse plastic bags, especially the Target ones- they're my fave. They even have ideas listed on the side for reusing them. We have 50 million tote bags around here & 9 times out of 10, we grab a plastic bag. They are a cluttered mess, but at least they're inside a cabinet so nobody can see them!

And I use disposable diapers!!! But I wouldn't if Baby Girl would just consistently tt in the potty. Poopy she's got down, but tt notsomuch. Let me stop, that's a whole other post.

BUT...

My hubby is a farmer & we own a farmer's market & I (+ several family members) grow a garden, which mine is looking pretty sad, but I do plan to remedy that & I try to compost & I buy local (even if it is the local Target).

My Shhh! Mommy's Blogging tee is made from organic cotton & I have a shirt or something made from hemp that I got in college.

Retro doesn't like for me to buy bottled water because he thinks that's dumb. "You can get water from the tap." But not at the Grub & Gas & in a convenient plastic bottle.

The little ones wear hand-me-downs & we pass along our stuff too. The nicer stuff goes to friends & the rest goes to charity.

And I don't flush when I go to the potty in the middle of the night. and the kids "forget" to flush quite often! My daddy taught me that when I still lived at home. But sometimes I forget to turn off the water when I brush my teeth. In fact, we do waste a lot of water. But we have a well & 2 ponds in our yard. Does that count?

However, I did find this website How To Go Greener & I'm going to try to do better (with SOME things)but I may need a 12-step program.

Maybe Sid the Science Kid can help.

Ya'll got any easy tips?

We aren't too green either. I manage to recycle our newspapers/magazines, but not our cans/plastics. I use reusable bags. And our next car is going to be a hybrid. Does living in an apartment count? It's a much smaller carbon footprint...

We do try... we recycle as best as we can... cans, glass and paper. We have started to replace our lights with fluorescent ones... I'm bad with the electricity though. There is always a TV on somewhere. Can't unplug the coffee maker as it's programmed to brew at 5am and that would mean we would have to reset it every day and I am too lazy. I drive a van that I am going to trade in for an SUV... not a Yukon but an SUV none the less and since I have 3 kids it's not a hybrid one. I have the heat on a lot too. Many of our appliances are not energy efficient, but as we slowly replace them we are looking for ones that are... I am trying to be better and I even hope to start composting this summer!

Great Post! Me, Green? Not so much. I actually called the City to see if they would come and take my recycle bin back!

This is my way of going green - I give and shop at Goodwills and Thrift stores. So there. Reused instead of buying new.

I admit to getting up in the morning, turn the shower on, go brush my teeth yes the water is running and then get in the shower.

I am not a very nice girl to the environment!

I'm not into the whole Green Thing either. The only thing I do is use my own bags at the grocery, but I was doing that before it was cool. I think the Green thing is a fad that will pass, just like a lot of other stuff.

I totally HEART this post! You absolutely get extra green points for putting it all out there.

I would say you are doing some great green things. We all need to improve. NYS has a great recycling program. That is one thing we have right. I don't flush in the middle of the night either and hubby gets mad! Why waste the water?
